United Missions of Taiwan

One of the great blessings of working in Taiwan is meeting the believers here who have a passion to reach others with the gospel. YWAM (Youth With a Mission) came to Taiwan in 1982 and has trained many overseas volunteers and Taiwanese into local and cross-cultural missions and ministry in local churches. About half or more of current YWAM staff are Taiwanese.

Another key missions organization in Taiwan is UMOT, United Missions of Taiwan. They have been mobilizing the local church for global missions, providing missions resources, and encouraging the sending of Taiwanese missionaries to UPGs (Unreached People Groups).

Finding the Need Through Surveys

Have you ever started something without really researching the need for it? Fortunately, UMOT did their homework and surveyed the entire island to find out how many churches and mission agencies there were, contacted each one, and asked how many had sent out missionaries. They were surprised to find that only 600 were sent out in 2016 out of an estimated 1.6 million Christians. (Christians comprise less than 5% of the total population of Taiwan.)

This information informed their plan on how to mobilize churches in Taiwan for greater engagement in global missions. UMOT started by encouraging churches to pray for the nations of the world by translating PrayerCast videos and the Global Prayer Digest into Chinese for the use of Taiwanese believers.

Perpectives Course

In our experience, the first time we really understood God’s heart for the world and his plan to bring all peoples into his kingdom was when we attended a Perspectives course in 1990. Perspectives is a life-changing course in world missions and UMOT has been hosting it here in Taiwan for the last few years in Chinese.

“Perspectives is a life-changing course in world missions.”

Here in Taiwan, the goal to send more people out as missionaries to the world and encourage churches to join in the effort is slowly being realized by the efforts of YWAM, UMOT and other missions sending agencies and churches on the island. As one of the leading nations in Asia, their influence in world missions can be felt around the world.
