A Taste of Animation
It’s likely that most of our blog readers know about the AniMissions Seminar, our intensive online training program that debuted last fall and will be offered again, starting April 24th. However, if you’re curious about animation, how it might be used in a missions context, and don’t have time for the seminar, we have a much lighter version available next month. It’s called the AniMissions EMDC Workshop and is free for EMDC members.
The workshop, beginning March 1st, consists of four two-hour Zoom sessions on each Tuesday. Homework can be done at your own pace throughout the week. We will also have a Discord server set up for direct student-instructor communication. If you are not familiar with EMDC, it is an online community of media and missions practitioners, and offers a wide range of workshops and training opportunities for a small annual fee.
What You Will Learn
In the AniMissions EMDC Workshop, students will get an overview of animation and why this powerful tool is so effective at helping cultures embrace the Gospel. Contextualization issues will also be touched on through case studies of how indigenous art can be incorporated into animated productions. We’ll introduce the Twelve Principles of Animation according to Disney animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnson, and examine the overall process of producing an animated short film.
The rest of the workshop will be hands-on as students begin learning the Blender software environment. Blender is a free, open-source program that can be used to create professional-level 3D and 2D graphics and animation. There is a steep learning curve, so the workshop will give only a basic overview of the software and then focus primarily on the Blender 2D Grease Pencil environment, as we create a character, build a simple animation “rig,” and then animate the character by making him talk.
