Using Media to Tell Our Stories

With less face-to-face meetings and travels, it’s been a good time to learn something new. Recently, we’ve been attending an online course about the Christian spiritual history of Europe and the factors that have given us the Europe of today. We won’t often find in the secular media the stories of faithful believers who changed the world for Christ.

Have you ever found that learning history is more interesting when a film about the subject is shown? To quickly and comprehensively delve into the life of a particular shaper of society from the past, like Jan Huss or the Moravian community, using both audio and video really helped us to immerse ourselves in their reality.

What about today? As the gospel spreads to more and more people on this earth, what can we do with the media tools in our hand that have potential to shape our society? Posting your personal testimony could be a signpost to some that faith in God is real and relevant for their lives as well.

If you’ve been involved in missions initiatives or church outreaches, would others be encouraged by stories of God’s faithfulness to accomplish his work during a certain place or time? Interviews with key witnesses and footage of major events can be edited together to document these special times and encourage others to walk together in faith.

Re-enactments are another way to tell a story about something in the past, especially if the people involved are the ones re-enacting the story. This act of remembrance for the participants strengthens their collective memory and draws others into “His-story”—history.

Dramatic evangelistic stories often combine a few testimonies together into one story in order to protect the identity of the person involved. These films can be a compelling factor in helping nonbelievers consider the choice of following Christ.

In secular media, we may not find the stories that people need to hear! Be encouraged to use what is in your hand to tell the story of God’s faithfulness.
