What are Disciple Making Movements (DMMs)?
Recently, I heard of a statistic from the Global Center for World Christianity. At this time, approximately 28% of the world has not had the opportunity to hear the gospel in their own culture and language. At the current rate of evangelization, that percentage will not change significantly by the year 2050, primarily because the birth rate in those people groups is exceeding the evangelization rate.
“And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” [Matthew 24:14] So what does this mean for the expansion of God’s kingdom here on earth until the Lord comes? Is there any way to increase the rate at which people hear the gospel, are discipled, and become part of Christ’s church?
In the book of Acts, the church grew exponentially through miraculous signs, healings, and Spirit-driven testimonies by the faithful witness of an ordinary group of men, who were the disciples of Jesus. Thousands were added to those who believed in a very short amount of time as they went from place to place.
DMM is another way to describe Church Planting Movements (CPMs), but the emphasis is on reproduction—disciples who reproduce disciples. Every disciple in a group (church) is faithful to share their faith and disciple others who share their faith and disciple others.
For many modern believers, church has become a place where only a few are actively making disciples. And so the rate of people coming to Christ, especially in historically “Christian” areas has slowed. The world will not be reached by simply adding people to church from other churches, but by multiplying the rate of ordinary believers sharing their faith to the world.

A Disciple Making Movement occurs when groups of disciples are reproducing groups of disciples four generations and beyond. Amazingly, it has been documented that there are over 1,000 DMMs happening in the world right now! There’s so much to be encouraged about.

If any of this sounds intriguing, C. Anderson from YWAM Frontier Missions is hosting a one-hour free live online training this week, called How to Have a Massive Kingdom Impact: Even if You are Not Famous, Rich or Super Talented. Sign up at https://www.ywamfm.org/freetraining.
By the end of the training, you will know more about Disciple Making Movements (DMMs) and be inspired by the exponential growth of the church and the power of sharing one’s faith.
